Homework, Week Four/Five

The classes are starting to go at different paces:

6a: Many of you owe past homeworks. Take this time to get caught up! Reiview everything we've done for a quiz next week, Oct. 8. Pages 1-6 have been worked on in class. Try to finish up anything that remains with 1-6, plus all past assignments, including vocabulary, if you haven't handed those in.

6b and 6c: Nice work on the most recent quizzes! We've now started to work on fractions. You have a one page handout to READ and finish. Repeat: READ. Learning to read math texts is an important skill!!

Do the handout and finish pages 1-6. If you feel confident that you can add and subtract simple fractions, proceed with 15. Take it slowly and check the answer key to make sure you are still on the right track! A few owe past homeworks or vocabulary sheets. Try to finish up.

Week Four Homework

6a and 6b/6c ended up with different assignments:

6a will complete 3, 4, 5.

6b/6c moved on to 15 and 16.

I will post some extra help for adding and subtracting fractions. Remember, finding common denominators is the main thing. Use your skills in finding the LCM to find common denominators for the fractions and then just add or subtract numerators.

Possible Pop Quiz on the Horizon

A pop quiz is, by definition, a surprise quiz. There may be one next week, so review what we have done so far!! Especially, GCF, LCM, factors, multiples, rules of divisibility, vocabulary words.

Scans of Week Three Handouts

Homework, Week Three

This week you should complete 13 and 14 in the new books we handed out.

There was also the classwork that we didn't quite finish in every class which I will be scanning in and posting. (It was the handout that had the definitions on one side, starting with the definiton of integers.)

Finish up any lingering handouts, vocabulary definitions. We started 13 and 14 in class (decimals) and it should be a review for everyone! Review the work you have already done on factors, multiples, primes, GCF's, LCM's, rules of divisibility.

Have someone drill you on your multiplication tables for extra credit. Possible pop quiz....next week!

Math Books

Hooray!! The new Advantage books arrived this week. Everyone should remember to put a name in an obvious place inside and outside. You might want to put a name/sticker on the front cover, too, to make handing in and handing back books go quickly! Thanks!!

I think you'll all like these books. They are YOURS to keep, so take good care of them. Remember, show all your work and use pencil!! Fountain pens and markers tend to bleed through the pages.

Remember that there is an answer key in the back. Use it as a tool to make sure you understand what you are doing. If I a page with only answers filled in, I might become suspicious and think the answer key was consulted. That is another reason why it is important to show your work!!!

Vocabulary Words

Prime number
Even number
Odd number
Composite number
Factor
Prime factorization
Exponent (power)
GCF (Greatest Common Factor)
LCM (Least Common Multiple)
Multiple
Divisible
Mixed numeral
Improper fraction

I urge you to use your own words, giving examples to help you to remember these concepts. The more you use your own words, the surer you will be of being able to remember these! At least that's the theory! And, when we have a test, you'll be able to use your vocabulary sheets.

Scans of Week Two Handouts

Here's your week two homework vocab. You need to define and give examples for each:
-composite number
-exponent
-rounding and its rules
-rules of divisibility for 9 and 4

And you obviously need to complete the worksheets above as well.

Don't procrastinate!

6a---Relax!!

Hi,

I know our class only met for a few minutes and we didn't have much of a chance to talk about anything, let alone the assignment. Just do your best and we'll go over everything in class!! Much of the material you will find is just a review of things you've seen before. See you Wednesday.

Evaluating expressions

On page 2 of homework handouts, you are asked to evaluate for b, assuming b = a number.

That simply means substitute the number given for b, and do the math.

So, if we have:

Evaluate the expression 3x when x=2,
that means that we will multiply 3 times 2.

If we have:
Evaluate the expression b-7 when b= 10,
that means we will subtract 7 from 10.

It sounds a little odd at first, but you get used to it.

Remember, multipication can sometimes look like a number next to a letter. For instance, 3b just means 3 times whatever "b" is.

When you email me....

One 6th grader e-mailed me with a question but I wasn't able to help, because I couldn't tell which problem was he/she had questions on. Please try to be as specific as you can about which one you are having trouble with.

Puzzles: Probablility and Magic Squares

I promised you another puzzle. This relates to combination locks. Imagine a combination lock that has three buttons. To open the lock you have to push the buttons, one at a time, in the correct order. What is the probability that you guess the order right on the very first time.

To figure this out, write out all of the possible orders. You might want to label the buttons A,B,C in order to think about the possiblities.

As soon as I find a good magic square, I will add it.

Worksheets for Week One. If you would like to view one in its true dimensions just click one on its thumbnail above. Then save it to your computer, as you would any image. It will print normally.

Homework, Week One

Please complete all of the handouts we had in class. If you lost one, I have scanned them and put them on here for you to print out or copy down at home.

Define the following terms for your vocabulary list:
Prime number, even number, odd number, composite number, factor, prime factorization, exponent, GCF, LCM, multiple, divisible, mixed numeral, improper fraction.

Please include lots of examples and/or diagrams with each definition. Please use your own words, to be sure that you really understand the words/concepts and are not just copying down a definition that you really don't understand.

You will file these in the Vocabulary section of your binder.

Week One's Homework consisted of 8 pages from the Advantage Math workbook. Pages 7.8,and 43,44,45,46,47, and 48 were photocopied and handed out in class. They were also scanned in and posted here for any students who misplaced copies.

Note that there is a typo on page 47 under divisibility rules. The divisibility rule for 6 should read "when a number is divisible by 2 AND 3." An astute student in 6c found that one and I will be sending a note to the publisher! Hooray for 6c!

This material covers factoring and multiples, as well as rules of divisibility, all critical for our work on fractions. It also covers prime numbers, which we will be talking about over and over!

WELCOME SIXTH GRADE

Hi sixth-graders. Welcome to the Ortega campus!

Your Spectrum math workbooks will arrive in about 2 weeks. Until then, we will be working on materials I prepare. Please:

1. File in a small (1/2 inch) 3 ring binder under worksheets.
2. Create 3 sections for your binder: Vocabulary, Worksheets, Quizzes.

Every week you will be getting vocabulary words to define. The definitions should be as clear as you need to make them to understand the terms. Put examples and/or drawings in, too, if that helps you to remember the meanings of the terms. The binders will be graded, so try to keep them neat and up-to-date.

When you get the workbooks, you will need to mark your name in them, clear-coat them if you want, and only use pencil when working in them. Whenever you get an assignment, you must show all your work in the places indicated. There is an answer key in the back, so you can do your own correcting in red ink or red pencil.

We will be having weekly quizzes, so please study the vocabulary, worksheets, and workbook homework each week. The quizzes will always be cumulative, so keep looking back over your notes!

Why weekly quizzes? The more you practice answering "multiple choice" questions, the easier they will be. So, when you take the ERBs or other standardized tests, it will be a lot easier for you.

The Spectrum workbooks will be yours to keep! We will be skipping around a bit in it, so stay posted on what you need to do. Like the vocabulary workbooks you get in English, these workbooks can be used as references when you need to study math basics in the future.

One last thing: your grades. One quarter of the grade will be based on each: class participation, quizzes, workbooks, and binders. With regard to binders, I will be paying the most attention to the completeness of the definition section, so really focus on those definitions!!!

I promise, we'll have fun, too, and I will try to post some fun puzzles and problems on the blog, too!!

Homework Guidelines for worksheets, workbook

Spectrum Math Workbook:
Only use pencil and ALWAYS show all work. The answers can be checked by you in the back of the book when you are not sure of yourself. Use red ink or red pencil to show corrections so you and I will learn from mistakes. The sixth grade workbooks should be in soon, and they will be yours to keep. You will be able to write in them and keep them as references. We will be skipping around a bit in the book, so be sure to keep up with what we are doing.
